Fourteen years ago (on March 9, 2012) I edited a video essay on Marjane Satrapi’s film masterpiece, PERSEPOLIS which in my estimation is one of the most heartfelt and compelling love letters to its author’s/director’s birthplace: Iran.

It was released in 2007, based on the graphic novel also written and animated by Satrapi herself. And to this day, few films from or about Iran can measure up to its spirit. After I had seen it, I knew I had seen a GREAT film that would stand the test of time and be received wholeheartedly by anyone who has a soul.

If there is any film I would recommend in learning about this great nation, PERSEPOLIS would be it. It is a supreme work of love and sacrifice. And without question, one of the greatest animated films of all time.

I am posting my video essay here in tribute to Ms. Satrapi who has recently passed away. She and all Iranians deserve so much better, than the world has allowed them to go through. May we all be worthy of her artistry and humanity.

Vale Marjane. RIP.
